DSS-1 Samplevision for DOS
The original version of Samplevision for DOS installed from 3 floppy disks. Here are
each of the original DOS disks zipped for ease of download. If you are attempting to
use this software, I have two words of caution:
1. To the best of my knowledge, this will NOT work on any MIDI interface except a
true MPU-401 card. If you are planning to use this with a soundcard MIDI interface,
I wish you luck. I could never get that to work. So, don’t ask for help there.
2. This software does NOT like Windows. I have only been able to get it to run on true
DOS. I run it on a 486 with true DOS, not a DOS prompt in windows 95 or higher.
Again, good luck if you want to try that. And, please let me know of any success. But,
I was never able to get that to work. So, I cannot help you there either.
The bottom line is that this software will run on even the most basic machine. I ran it on a 8088 for a very long time. So, if you have an old 286, 386, 486 around with DOS on it, stick a basic MPU-401 card in it and you are in business.
One more thing. Unlike the newer Windows version, the DOS version uses a proprietary storage format. So, it will not read .WAV files. It reads and saves only as .SMP. If you get this thing working for you, e-mail me. I do have some old sample format conversion software that does support the .SMP format.
